Hunterdon Central began its reign as a top pole vault program in the late 1990's under coach Jeff Tindall. Tindall coached girls indoor and outdoor record holder Lauren Contursi (former state record holder); as well as boys indoor co-record holders Michael Tucholski and Michael Roberti, and boys outdoor co-record holders Frank Dumbreski and Michael Tucholski.
Coach Tindall, along with former Athletic Director Robert Rossi and former Superintendent Lee Seitz, helped push the NJSIAA into allowing girls pole vault to become a scoring event in New Jersey. And since the inception of the event, Hunterdon Central girl pole vaulters have consistently been vaulting at a high level.
Coach Tindall pushed the bar higher for all his athletes both physically and psychologically. As a psychologist, he was able to help train the mind into becoming a better vaulter. His legacy remains one of the best pole vault coaches ever in New Jersey.
Coach Mike Roberti took over the Red Devil pole vault coaching as a volunteer in 2013, and full time coach for the 2013-14 season. Roberti, who was a former pole vaulter at Hunterdon Central, is proud to help keep the tradition of strong vaulting alive. Many of his techniques and coaching strategies are a shadow of what Coach Tindall had taught, as well as innovative drills and fundamentals to help the athletes jump consistently, safer and higher.
Central vault coach Mike Roberti has coached many Skyland Conference, State Sectional, and State Group 4 champions. He coached school boys indoor co-record holder Tyler Bernstein, as well as indoor and outdoor pole vault relay record holders.
